Israel's hard-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir caused international outrage after he posted a video showing detained Gaza flotilla activists being manhandled by security personnel.Ben-Gvir posted the video to his X account on Wednesday with the caption: 'That's how we welcome the terror supporters. Welcome to Israel.'The footage shows masked officers aggressively subduing Gaza flotilla activists by pushing them down, forcing them onto all fours, and dragging them across the floor. The detainees are then seen zip-tied and lined up inside a warehouse, kneeling with their faces pressed to the ground, as the minister waves an Israeli flag and shouts: 'Welcome to Israel. We're the landlords,' followed by, 'Good job. That's how you do it.' The footage was swiftly condemned by politicians including Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.'The way minister Ben Gvir dealt with the flotilla activists is not in line with Israel's values and norms. I have instructed the relevant authorities to deport the provocateurs (activists) as soon as possible,' Netanyahu said.In a statement on X, Meloni slammed the 'unacceptable' treatment of Gaza flotilla activists detained by Israel. The detainees are then zip-tied and lined up inside a warehouse, kneeling with their faces pressed to the ground The minister waves an Israeli flag and shouts: 'Welcome to Israel. We're the landlords,' followed by, 'Good job. That's how you do it.' The footage shows masked officers aggressively subduing Gaza flotilla activists'It is inadmissible that these demonstrators, including many Italian citizens, are subjected to this treatment that violates human dignity,' Meloni wrote. She said the Italian government was taking the necessary steps to secure the release of the Italian citizens, adding that Italy 'demands an apology for the treatment reserved to these demonstrators.'Meloni also said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will summon the Israeli ambassador to request a formal clarification on the incident.Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also wrote on X: 'You knowingly caused harm to our State in this disgraceful display - and not for the first time. 'You have undone tremendous, professional, and successful efforts made by so many people - from IDF soldiers to Foreign Ministry staff and many others. No, you are not the face of Israel.'In another shot from the disturbing video, armed guards watch over a group of bound activists as they are forced to kneel on an exposed metal floor while the Israeli national anthem plays. One clip shows a detainee with his hands zip tied speaking to Ben-Gvir who repeats the slogan 'Am Israel Chai,' over and over again. The phrase means 'The people of Israel live.'At the end of the footage, a woman is heard wailing, with Ben-Gvir saying to the camera, 'Don't be bothered by their screams.'In a second video, Ben-Gvir said the activists 'came here all full of pride like big heroes. Look at them now.''I say to Prime Minister Netanyahu, give them to me for a long, long time, give them to us for the terrorist prisons, that's what it should look like,' he added. The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkey last week in the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory, after Israeli forces intercepted a previous convoy last month. The Israeli Navy on Tuesday finished its takeover of the 68 vessels bound for Gaza, with the country's Foreign Ministry confirming that 'all 430 activists have been transferred to Israeli vessels and are making their way to Israel,' adding that they 'will be able to meet with their consular representatives.'Activists on board included Italian lawmaker Dario Carotenuto and the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly. Earlier this week, Micheál Martin, Ireland's Prime Minister, called Israel's interception of the Gaza-bound boats in international waters 'absolutely unacceptable.'Israel has called the flotilla 'a PR stunt at the service of Hamas' with no real intent to deliver aid to Gaza. The boats carry a symbolic amount of aid. Legal rights centre Adalah, whose lawyers went to the detention centre in southern Israel to meet the detainees, said in a statement: 'Israel is employing a criminal policy of abuse and humiliation against activists seeking to confront Israel's ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people.' In another shot from the disturbing video, armed guards watch over a group of bound activists as they are forced to kneel One clip shows a detainee with his hands zip tied speaking to Ben-Gvir who repeats the slogan 'Am Israel Chai,' over and over again In the past, Ben-Gvir has posted footage on social media mocking Palestinian detainees.Earlier this year, he was filmed watching Israeli forces raid a section of Ofer Prison near Ramallah in the West Bank. The Palestinian Prisoner Society stated that Israeli forces raided Section 26 during the evening security check. The 15-minute operation deployed police dogs and stun grenades and was heavily covered by the media. According to the PPS, Minister Ben-Gvir stayed for an hour, using the time to hurl provocative and degrading remarks at Palestinian prisoners.Detainees also reported that 'guards forced them to keep their heads and faces pressed to the ground during suppression operations, to humiliate them, degrading their dignity and physically torturing them,' according to the group. And testimonies heard by a lawyer included 'several accounts of Ben-Gvir stepping on prisoners' heads and filming their humiliation, torture and abuse.' A former Israeli hostage taken to Gaza on October 7 reported that Hamas militants routinely beat and starved Israeli hostages whenever Ben-Gvir bragged in the media about worsening the conditions of Palestinian detainees. 'Once he talked about [the limited] food [Palestinians prisoners were receiving], and they locked us in a cage and said we could eat one date and drink salt water,' the freed hostage told Israeli Channel 12.
