A video posted by Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Wednesday on X showing him taunting detained activists from a Gaza-bound flotilla kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs and foreheads on the ground sparked international outrage.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the treatment of the activists, calling it “unacceptable.”

“It is intolerable that these protesters, among whom there are many Italian citizens, are subjected to this treatment, which violates human dignity,” she said in a statement.

Meloni further added that the Italian foreign ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador to request a formal clarification of the events.
