Washington will review the newly agreed trade conditions

MEPs have significantly backed down on a safeguard suspension clause as the price for a EU-US trade deal compromise, which looks set to sail smoothly through European Parliament despite reservations.

According to a text drafted overnight and obtained by Euractiv, Parliament’s initial push to suspend the trade deal if the US failed to comply with its side of the bargain will not be as stringent as many MEPs had hoped.

The text now merely “empowers” the European Commission to suspend the agreement through secondary legislation based on “substantiated information gathered on its own initiative or received from any reliable source, including a member state or the European Parliament”.
