The Athletic’s seventh annual Michigan fan survey arrived just as talk of a 24-team College Football Playoff began to heat up.So how do Michigan fans feel about a possible future with fewer trips to the Citrus Bowl, no Big Ten Championship Game and radically altered stakes for the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry?“I think the expanded Playoff will ruin college football,” wrote Ben H. “Not ‘make worse.’ Ruin.”Michigan fans, it seems, aren’t ready to rush headlong into CFP expansion after a two-year Playoff drought. Earning a spot in the 12-team field is the immediate goal for new coach Kyle Whittingham, who was tasked with cleaning up the mess left by the previous regime. The response to Whittingham’s hiring is overwhelmingly positive, though it should be noted that Michigan fans had a similar response to Sherrone Moore’s hiring two years ago. While the majority of fans are optimistic about the program’s future under Whittingham, that doesn’t mean they’re all penciling in Michigan as a Playoff team in 2026.“After the Sherrone Moore shenanigans, I’m just happy there’s an adult wearing the whistle,” wrote CJ W. “Not worried about this year at all. Eight-plus (wins) is good.”Here are the full survey results.1. Compared with this time last year, what’s your level of optimism as a Michigan fan?
