Durban University of Technology registrar, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane comforts the late Nokwethemba Myaka’s aunt, Sabathile Myaka at the graduation on Tuesday.

Tears filled the graduation hall as Nokwethemba Myaka’s family walked onto the stage to receive the qualification she never got the chance to collect herself.

Just weeks earlier, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) student had been preparing for one of the biggest moments of her life. She had bought her graduation outfit, made plans with her family and looked forward to celebrating alongside her cousin.

Instead, her loved ones accepted her posthumous Diploma in Information and Communication Technology in Business Analysis during DUT’s Autumn Graduation ceremony at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban on Tuesday.

Myaka, who would have become the first graduate in her family, died on 27 April after suffering complications during childbirth at a Durban hospital. Her baby girl survived.
