Prime Video's hit superhero series has finally come to an end with a gory and emotional finale10:03, 20 May 2026The date circled in every The Boys fan's calendar has finally arrived: Season 5 finale day. After five seasons of varying popularity, Eric Kripke's superhero thriller series has finally come to a bloody and emotional end. Released at 8am today (May 20) on Prime Video, the final episode reveals the fates of its most beloved characters (ahem, Terror), love-to-hate villains and everyone in between. While the fifth season has been the most-watched yet with over 55 million viewers, according to Prime Video, it has also been one of the more controversial. Fans had complained of 'filler' episodes throughout the season, prompting show creator Kripke to hit back."None of the things that happen in the last few episodes will matter if you don't flesh out the characters," he said in an interview with TV Guide. "I'm getting a lot of online dissatisfaction, to put it politely. And I'm like, 'What are you expecting? Are you expecting a huge battle scene every episode?'"Those who have stuck with the show are certainly rewarded for their loyalty in the final hour. If you haven't yet watched the episode titled 'Blood and Bone' then be warned that major spoilers lie ahead. Let's recap on exactly what happened. The Boys Season 5, Episode 8 ending explainedThe final episode shows a memorial for the beloved Frenchie who died heroically at the end of Episode 7. We learn that Frenchie and Butcher's shot-in-the-dark plan to expose Kimiko to enough radiation to give her powers just like Soldier Boy has actually worked, meaning she can now remove any superhero's abilities. In order to pull her out of her grief and test out the power, Sister Sage tries to provoke Kimiko and it works. She swiftly removes Sister Sage's abilities, relieving her of being the cleverest woman in the world and allowing her to binge Love Island without having to numb her own brain with a needle first. Result! The Boys are left with one mission: foil the now immortal Homelander's plan to 'reboot the universe'. To do so they must infiltrate the White House, and while they find they've walked into a trap when they get there, Ashley saves them, redeeming herself after previously throwing the President under the bus to save her own skin. The gang split up with Mother's Milk and Hughie killing Oh Father with a ball gag, while in a full-circle moment, Starlight come face to face again with The Deep. She uses her powers to throw him into the sea where he meets his demise at the tentacles of the marine life he has repeatedly disrespected. So what happens to Homelander? Kimiko, Ryan and Butcher find him in the Oval Office and Kimiko uses her newfound ability to remove his powers. However, she also takes Ryan's and Butcher's with the force of her blast, driven by the memory of her late lover Frenchie. Now they are both mere mortals, Butcher proceeds to kill Homelander in front of the world. It isn't the end of the story for Butcher though, who believes Homelander's death will not stop the Vought machine. He attempts to unleash the supe-killing virus through the sprinkler system but pauses after seeing Hughie. In a heartbreaking moment, Hughie shoots Butcher, killing him.Elsewhere in the episode, Butcher's dog Terror dies in his sleep, Singer is restored as President and Kimiko heads to France in honour of Frenchie. Meanwhile Hughie and Starlight find out they're having a daughter who they will name after Hughie's girlfriend who was killed by A-Train in the very first episode.Article continues belowSeasons 1 to 5 of The Boys are now streaming on Prime Video
