T2 opened in May 2017 in time to serve the APEC Economic Leaders' Week that Da Nang hosted that November. Its expansion is scheduled to finish by May 19, 2027, the terminal's 10th anniversary.

The terminal quickly exceeded its design capacity of 4 million passengers a year by processing more than 7.1 million in 2019. Traffic fell during the pandemic but has since rebounded, reaching 6.18 million passengers in 2024 and 6.81 million in 2025.

The terminal has kept that its Skytrax 5-star rating for three straight years, in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Skytrax assessors are due to evaluate it again at the end of 2026, with the expansion still under way.

The expansion, run by the Da Nang People's Committee and the terminal's private operator, Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC (AHT), will raise the design capacity to 6 million passengers a year. That is meant to cover projected growth through 2030, part of a wider master plan to lift the whole airport, domestic and international terminals combined, to 20 million passengers a year.
