A World Cup-winning international basketball coach is moving to New Zealand to lead the country's professional franchise into its next season.

The Breakers have appointed Gordon Herbert as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

Herbert will join the team after finishing a successful period coaching the German national team, while also maintaining his current role as the head coach of the Canadian national team.

During his time leading Germany, Herbert guided the team to an undefeated 8–0 run to win the 2023 FIBA World Cup gold medal, followed by a top-four finish at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His wider coaching career spans several decades in elite European circuits, including the EuroLeague.

Breakers president of basketball operations Dillon Boucher said Herbert was a world-class strategist with a proven track record of winning at the highest level.
