The DC-ROMA RISC-V Mainboard III for the Framework Laptop 13 is now available for purchase for $699 and up. First announced earlier this year, it’s the latest in a line of mainboards that are designed to fit inside of Framework’s modular laptops. But it’s the most powerful model with a RISC-V chip to date.At the heart of the new board is a 2.5 GHz SpacemiT K3 octa-core RISC-V processor. It’s the first Framework-compatible board to feature a chip with support for the RVA23 RISC-V profile, and SpacemiT says the chip delivers up to 60 TOPS of AI performance.Like other Framework Mainboards, you can either use this new model in a laptop or as a standalone desktop computer (by attaching a display, keyboard, mouse, and power supply. So that $699 price tag is kind of the price of a fully functional RISC-V PC and not just a PC component. But if you already have a Framework Laptop 13, you can use this board in a laptop form factor. Or you could pay extra for a bundle that includes a Framework Laptop 13.There are three versions of the DC-ROMA RISC-V Mainboard III available:Basic: mainboard + Cooler Master case, WiFi module & antenna, Debug expansion cardStandard: mainboard + case, WiFi module & antenna, HDMI and USB-C expansion cardsPro: mainboard + Framework Laptop 13 + WiFi module, SSD, and two USB-C expansion cardsThe $699 starting price is for a standard model with 16GB of RAM and no SSD. Prices for the Standard package start at $899 for a 16GB + 1TB model. And the Pro version starts at $1499.You can also pay extra for up to 32GB of RAM, but unsurprisingly that will drive up the price a lot.Other features include an M.2 2280 slot for a PCIe NVMe or SATA SSD, an M.2 2230 E-Key slot for a wireless card, a microSD card reader, and multiple USB 3.0 Type-C ports (one supports DisplayPort 1.4 video output and two supports 65W USB power delivery for charging.Mainboard maker Deep Computing says the system will ship with a version of Ubuntu 26.04 that “is for RISC-V developer usage and is not production-ready,” but that users “may contact Canonical if you wish to purchase support and security maintenance or if you want to purchase Ubuntu Pro). The first batch of the new boards is expected to begin shipping by the end of June.
