TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto delivered a speech before a plenary session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, to present the country’s macroeconomic framework and key fiscal policy principles (KEM-PPKF) for the 2027 state budget.Prabowo became the first Indonesian president to personally present the KEM-PPKF before Parliament, a task that has traditionally been carried out by the finance minister on behalf of the president. The president arrived at the MPR/DPR/DPD parliamentary complex in Jakarta at around 09:30 AM local time. He was welcomed by House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who had arrived earlier.During his address, Prabowo said his decision to personally deliver the presentation was made on his own initiative.“I deliberately requested this opportunity to stand before all of you and personally present the direction of our nation’s economic and fiscal policies,” said Prabowo, who also chairs the Gerindra Party.According to the president, the current global economic situation remains highly uncertain and turbulent. He pointed to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, saying that although geographically distant, they continue to affect Indonesia’s economy.“Because of the challenges we are facing, I believe the President of the Republic of Indonesia should be present directly to convey the main direction of our economic thinking and state management,” said the former defense minister.Chairperson of the House Commission XI overseeing finance and banking, Mukhamad Misbakhun, said the presentation marked a new precedent in Indonesia’s fiscal policymaking process.“Usually, the macroeconomic framework and fiscal policy principles are delivered by the finance minister on behalf of the president. Today, they were presented directly by the president, marking a new tradition,” Misbakhun said at the parliamentary complex in Senayan on Wednesday. He explained that the KEM-PPKF presentation marks the initial stage of discussions on Indonesia’s 2027 state budget (APBN). The framework includes a range of macroeconomic assumptions, such as projected economic growth, inflation, the rupiah exchange rate, crude oil and gas lifting targets, indicative budget allocations for ministries and agencies, and yields on 10-year government bonds (SBN).Misbakhun also dismissed speculation that Prabowo’s appearance before Parliament was linked to recent pressure on the rupiah.Instead, he said the president wanted the presentation of the economic framework to receive broader public attention.“Of course, the public will pay attention to this, and it will become a new tradition in state governance,” Misbakhun said.Alfitria Nefi Pratiwi contributed to the writing of this article.Read: Prabowo Orders Rp67 Trillion Cut to MBG BudgetClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
