Facebook parent Meta has quietly removed support for end-to-end encryption in direct messages on the Instagram platform, amid controversy over the safety implications of the feature.

Meta did not publicly announce the change, but updated its terms and conditions for Instagram in March to indicate that the feature would be removed after 8 May.

The company said in a statement provided to Silicon UK that it ended the feature because “very few people” were opting to use it.

End-to-end encryption remains available on other Meta offerings, including Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
