Students booed former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt as he talked about technology and AI at the graduation ceremony for the University of Arizona, in a sign of the strong feelings the subject arouses in many people.

Schmidt acknowledged that people had unintentionally built technology that would “polarise democracies and unsettle a generation of young people”.

Boos grew louder as Schmidt mentioned AI.
