The US Senate has advanced a War Powers Resolution aimed at halting military operations against Iran unless President Donald Trump receives explicit authorisation from Congress.
The move marked the first time the Senate voted in favour of the measure, representing a direct challenge to the Republican president’s executive war powers.
Despite the symbolic and political significance of the vote, the resolution still requires approval in the House of Representatives before it can take effect.
Even if passed by Congress, the measure would likely face a presidential veto from Trump, US media reported.
