Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie, backed by the local Democratic Party establishment, defeated his opponent, Lucia Simonelli, in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District primary election Tuesday. With roughly 51% of votes counted, Harvie beat Simonelli with about 65% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.Harvie will face incumbent Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) in November’s general election. Fitzpatrick ran unopposed in the primary.

Harvie pitched himself as a tested, electable challenger, while Simonelli ran as a grassroots alternative with a background in climate policy.

For years, Democrats have circled Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District as a prime pickup opportunity — only to come up short each time. Fitzpatrick has managed to turn what should be a swing seat into reliably safe ground, leveraging deep roots in Bucks County, formidable fundraising, and a carefully cultivated brand that blends pragmatism with party loyalty.

But this cycle, Democrats are making another push and will use Harvie to channel outsider energy into a district that has long resisted it.
