On Monday, at least three people were killed after two teenagers opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County with an adjacent school. The two suspects, ages 17 and 18, died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, Chief Scott Wahl of the San Diego Police Department said in a news conference. Authorities have not publicly identified the victims, though officials confirmed that one was security guard Amin Abdullah, a father of eight who died after helping minimize the bloodshed. An Islamic Center imam said its teachers, students, and other school staff members who were present at the mosque at the time of the shooting are safe. Wahl said the shooting is currently being investigated as a hate crime.
