Mumbai's city-wide CCTV surveillance network is in for a massive expansion with the deployment of 15,000 new AI-powered cameras under a Rs 2,140-crore project, an official said on Tuesday.The project, expected to roll out this month, will integrate advanced video analytics such as facial recognition, speed detection, and behavioural analysis into the city's security framework, he said.The Mumbai police have installed more than 10,000 CCTVs across the city in multiple phases as part of its CCTV surveillance project.According to officials, the next phase of expansion will build on earlier stages of the Mumbai City Surveillance Project and incorporate AI-driven video analytics, including facial recognition, traffic monitoring, speed-violation detection and behavioural analysis.The initiative, being executed by a consortium of GVPR Engineers Limited, Secutech Automation and CMS Computers, is designed to strengthen real-time monitoring, inter-agency coordination, and overall public safety across the city, it was stated.Feeds from these cameras will be integrated into a unified operational framework to assist law enforcement and city authorities in day-to-day tasks such as traffic regulation, incident response and urban monitoring, the official said.In a high-density city like Mumbai, the upgraded system will also aid disaster response, civic monitoring and traffic management, in addition to law enforcement.The Maharashtra government sanctioned Rs 2,140 crore for phase-3 of the project and awarded the major contract to GVPR Engineers, the official said.
