Guwahati: Tension has engulfed the disputed Lapangap area along the Meghalaya-Assam border in West Karbi Anglong after a peace meeting between representatives from both sides ended without any resolution.The area has witnessed the dispute over cultivation and land ownership soon triggered fresh friction between groups from the two sides, leading to confrontation and stone-pelting.The representative of the Karbi Students’ Union said, “We want peace and we have come forward with our people’s demands. Although one person from our community lost his life, that does not mean residents of Tapat or Assam will continue holding onto that grievance. We want to move ahead towards a permanent solution.”Meanwhile, a representative from Meghalaya maintained that the state has no objection to Assam villagers continuing cultivation on their existing paddy fields, but said the dispute is over other portions of land.The peace meeting was held near Lapangap in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district in an attempt to defuse tensions in the long-disputed border area claimed by both Meghalaya and Assam.Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the discussions were held in a peaceful atmosphere, although some contentious issues remained unresolved.He said that the matter was being addressed at the highest political level, with the chief ministers of both Meghalaya and Assam working towards a resolution.Assam has an interstate border dispute with Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland. Parleys are on to resolve border disputes with these states. On July 26, 2021, there were clashes along Assam-Mizoram border which resulted in the death of seven people and injuries to several others. The Union Home ministry had to intervene. Assam’s Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi share a 164.6-km long border with Mizoram’s three districts of Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit.
