Police officers on Tuesday dispersed a group of immigrants who had gathered outside the Durban Central Police Station amid rising tensions over anti-immigrant sentiments in parts of South Africa.

Videos seen by SaharaReporters showed scores of immigrants assembled around the police station, expressing fears for their safety after reportedly being told by some South Africans to return to their home countries.

The footage also captured heavily armed police officers moving in to disperse the gathering as anxious men, women and children looked on.

Some of the immigrants were heard pleading for protection, insisting that they were living in fear following increasing hostility directed at foreign nationals.
