The bodies of two more doomed Italian divers have been recovered from a cave in the Maldives, as the dangerous mission to retrieve the remaining pair continues.
Tragedy struck on Thursday, after five Italians – including a mother and daughter – died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of around 165ft, in the worst single diving accident in the history of the tiny Indian Ocean nation.
The body of their instructor, Gianluca Benedetti, was found on the same day, but it wasn't until Monday that the four others were located by a team of elite Finnish divers.
While Benedetti was recovered at the mouth of the Thinwana Kandu cave, also known as Shark Cave, the other four were located 'pretty much together' in the cavern's third and final chamber.
At 1.46pm local time on Tuesday, confirmation arrived that the bodies of Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of ecology at the University of Genoa, and marine biologist Federico Gualtieri had been brought to the surface.
