Businessman Sieunarine Coosal was among three regional leaders awarded honorary doctoral degrees by the University of the Southern Caribbean yesterday.It is Coosal’s third honorary doctorate; the other two were awarded by The University of the West Indies and the University of Trinidad and Tobago.At the university’s 93rd graduation ceremony at its St Joseph campus, honorary degrees were presented to Coosal (Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa); Fitzroy Harewood, president of Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited and a USC alumnus (Doctor of Business, Honoris Causa); and attorney Claire Chunlan Aleong-Hosten, a former USC valedictorian (Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa).

Aleong-Hosten worked with the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation in Washington.Coosal, group executive chairman and managing director of the Coosal’s Group of Companies, was described by USC as a “distinguished entrepreneur, industry leader and philanthropist,” and was recognised for his decades-long contribution to civil engineering, construction, manufacturing and infrastructure development across Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.
