The International Gymnastics Federation (World Gymnastics) has decided to remove all restrictions on athletes from Russia and Belarus, allowing them to once again compete under their national flag and anthem.
The decision was taken by the federation’s executive committee during a meeting held over the weekend in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. In an official statement, the governing body confirmed that “all restrictions applicable to Russian and Belarusian athletes from February 2022” have been lifted.
The move marks a significant policy shift in international gymnastics, reversing measures that had been in place since early 2022.
According to the federation, one of the first major appearances for the Russian women’s rhythmic gymnastics team under the restored conditions will be at the European Championships in Varna, Bulgaria. The competition is scheduled to take place between May 27 and May 31.
The announcement means athletes from both countries will now be able to compete fully represented by their national symbols at upcoming international events, including the Varna championship, which is expected to feature strong participation in rhythmic gymnastics.
