A nonagenarian farmer on Monday staged a protest during the grievance redress meeting at the Dindigul Collectorate urging the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to remove the encroachment from a waterbody in Nilakottai in Dindigul district. He said it was a long-pending demand. The farmer, Viralimayadevar, 90, of Viralipatti in Nilakottai alleged that a water channel in the locality that served as a water source to agricultural lands had been encroached upon.Viralimayadevar complained that he has been continuously submitting the petitions to the authorities seeking necessary action since 2013. However, no action had been taken in this regard. He submitted a similar petition to the Collector during the grievance redress meeting and demanded that immediate action be taken on his petition. To drive home his point, he sat down inside the meeting hall and broke down in tears. After the authorities assured the farmer that they would look into the issue, he left the hall.
