One MP described a leading Labour contender’s call to rejoin the EU as ‘a staggering level of out of touch’

The British Labour Party has reignited national controversy over Brexit at the moment when one working-class parliamentary constituency, where 65% backed leaving the EU, now holds the key to Britain’s political future.

The question of rejoining the EU has been thrust centre-stage in the battle to replace Keir Starmer as prime minister.

Jonathan Hinder, a Labour MP for the northern constituency of Pendle and Clitheroe, attacked Wes Streeting – who last week resigned from his cabinet post as health minister to fight in a looming leadership contest – for pledging to rejoin the EU if he replaces Starmer.
