President Donald Trump's approval rating dipped to a new term low in a New York Times/Siena poll published May 18.Just 37% approve of Trump's job performance in the poll conducted May 11-15 among 1,507 registered voters. (It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.)The most recent approval rating from the pollster is down three points from the last Times/Siena poll in January and the lowest of his second term. It also comes in under the average approval rating calculated by the Times across multiple pollsters, which is at a term low of 38% as of May 18, while disapproval is at a term high of 60%.The most recent poll shows the war in Iran is particularly unpopular amid rising costs for voters, the Times reported."As both parties mobilize for expensive and bitter midterm contests, the survey suggests that Republican candidates are entering their general-election races with stark political liabilities," pollsters at the Times said. Here is what else the poll showed about voters' views on Trump.Two-thirds of voters think war in Iran was the wrong decisionThe pollster asked if Trump's decision to go to war with Iran was the right or wrong decision. Overall, 64% of respondents said it was the wrong decision, and 30% said it was the right decision.While the majority of Republicans thought it was the right decision, 73% of independents thought it was the wrong decision.Less than a quarter of all voters thought the conflict was worth the costs, according to the Times. Pentagon officials told lawmakers on May 12 the cost of the war nine weeks in was $29 billion.Trump's worst issue approval on cost of livingIn addition to the war's price tag, disruptions to the oil and gas supply chain at the Strait of Hormuz have driven up prices for consumers. The average price of a gallon of regular gas as of May 18 is $4.515, according to AAA. At the same time last year, it was $3.179.Among the issues asked about in the Times/Siena poll, Trump received his worst approval rating on the cost of living, with 69% disapproving of how he is handling it, versus 28% approving.Additionally, 44% of voters also said Trump's policies had hurt them personally, up from 36% when the pollster asked in the fall.What is Trump's approval rating?Trump's approval rating has been net negative for about a year and has been fluctuating but trending more negative over the last several months.
