Nigel Farage is all too aware that he has no time to lose in making Reform’s case to the good people of Makerfield. Andy Burnham has previously vowed to drag Britain back into the EU. He has also had a pop at Shabana Mahmood’s immigration reforms, which polling shows are overwhelmingly popular with the public, if not with his leftie Labour membership base. However, the so-called ‘King of the North’ is clearly quite comfortable hiding inconvenient truths or political beliefs to aid his personal ambitions – and will no doubt spend much of this week doing just that on the campaign trail.
Enter Reform. Mr S understands that no stone will be left unturned in making sure Makerfield knows exactly what, among his many shapeshifting acts, Burnham stands for. The mission begins in earnest today, when the party unleashes its first spate of attack ads.
The graphics, set to plaster social media feeds, will feature Burnham dragging a suitcase as he searches for a seat to stand in to get to the final destination of Downing Street. The ad will read: ‘For his own career, not for Makerfield.’ A separate digital poster will depict an ‘Andy Burnham seat generator’, in a bid to get minds spinning over whether the Manchester Mayor’s priorities are local issues or his career.
