The development comes amid growing tension within the opposition party over efforts to settle for a consensus presidential candidate among leading contenders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has appointed former Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke, and former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, to head key committees for the party’s forthcoming presidential primaries amid ongoing internal disagreements over the choice of a consensus candidate.

The appointments were announced in a statement released on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

According to the statement, Imoke will serve as Chairman of the Presidential Screening Committee, while Abdulfatah Ahmed was named Chairman of the Presidential Election Committee ahead of the ADC presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026.
