MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) is currently investigating a company for supposedly cornering a significant portion of import quotas using multiple entities, according to DA.

The DA did not disclose the identity of the company under probe, although this particular scenario prompted it to revise a decades-long policy that allows importing pork at lower tariffs.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA discovered that an accredited trader is using 18 companies to secure import quotas through the minimum access volume (MAV) mechanism.

“We discovered a MAV holder, a company, and then we traced 18 companies linked to them. There is one representative, with almost all of them sharing the same address, but they are different companies,” Tiu Laurel said in an interview.
