MANILA, Philippines — The Senate should convene as an impeachment court on Monday to begin the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte and recover from a “week of chaos” that roiled the chamber, Akbayan Rep. Percival Cendaña said on Sunday.

In a statement, Cendaña said the upper chamber must immediately convene as an impeachment court to jumpstart proceedings against Duterte, as he called on the public to guard the trial and urged senators to avoid unnecessary delays.

“Now that the institution’s reputation is under strain, the Senate all the more must carry out its constitutional mandate to try the case against the vice Ppresident,” he said in Filipino. “The Senate needs to make amends to the people.”
