Residents of Sayaya community in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State have reportedly been thrown into fear and uncertainty after bandits imposed a ₦30million levy on the village.
The development has heightened concerns over worsening insecurity in rural communities across Nigeria’s northwest region, where residents continue to face attacks, kidnappings and forced extortion by heavily armed criminal gangs.
According to a security source, Bakatsine, the bandits demanded the money from the community under threat of violent attacks should residents fail to comply.
The levy, according to locals, has created panic among villagers already struggling with economic hardship and persistent security threats.
