Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez and play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt will call the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game on Saturday, June 6, as the Fox studio team will move into the Bronx booth.Jeter, Ortiz, Rodriguez and Burkhardt are usually in the Fox Sports studio featured during the All-Star Game, the playoffs and the World Series. Rodriguez was a weekly game analyst on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball,” while Jeter and Ortiz have never been game analysts.Fox wants the approach to be a little different than a straight call of the game, favoring more of hanging with the foursome as they reflect on their experiences in the rivalry. Burkhardt, using his play-by-play and hosting skills, will guide the action.
“We know people are tuning in to see the game,” Fox Sports president Brad Zager told The Athletic. “We always appreciate that fact. What will be different is the depth of storytelling that we can tell with these guys all in the booth for the length of the game.”Jeter, Ortiz, A-Rod and Burkhardt are expected to be joined by guests throughout the game. The broadcast will be produced by Fox’s top MLB studio producer, Bardia Shah-Rais, and its lead MLB game producer, Aaron Stojkov. Jeter, Ortiz and Rodriguez played in 130 Yankees-Red Sox games together, according to Fox Sports.“We feel like one story will trigger the next story,” Zager said. “I think the biggest difference you are going to see is that it is going to be much more free-flowing, much more of a hang and much more of a walk down Yankees-Red Sox history than a normal broadcast.”The game will follow Fox’s coverage of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown.
