Fresh from the success of her visit to Italy, the Princess of Wales is "feeling inspired" and set to travel to India with husband William on their most ambitious foreign visit for more than four years19:41, 15 May 2026Updated 20:34, 15 May 2026The Princess of Wales is set to join Prince William on a huge diplomatic mission to India.Following the success of her visit to Italy this week, where she returned to official international duties for the first time in three and a half years, sources have confirmed the Princess is relishing the prospect of accompanying her husband to South Asia in November.Plans are being made for the Prince and Princess to attend William’s glittering Earthshot Awards in Mumbai, while also taking on a politically sensitive trip to the capital Delhi.The Prince of Wales will host the sixth instalment of his environmental awards in Mumbai, with the princess marking the third time she has attended the awards having previously accompanied him at the star studded event in London in 2021 and Boston in 2022.Kensington Palace aides and mandarins at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are confident the timing is now right for the Prince and Princess to launch their biggest joint venture in more than four years, especially following the success of the King and Queen’s State Visit to the US earlier this month.A royal source said: “The Prince and Princess of Wales stand ready to assist the country however they can. The plans are in the early stages but it promises to be an amazing experience.”The Prince and Princess of Wales undertook a week-long royal tour of India and Bhutan in April 2016. The tour was a huge success and credited for strengthening ties between Britain and India, with high profile engagements acorss Mumbai, New Delhi, Kaziranga National Park in Assam, and the Taj Mahal in Agra.The Princess spent two days this week in Reggio Emilia in Italy on a fact finding mission for her work researching the early years development of children.Thousands came out to see her when she arrived in the main square and across locations including schools, cooking clubs and a recycling plant.A royal source said the Princess was “blown away” with the reception she received after being greeted by thousands in the streets and has returned home “full of excitement”.The Princess is expected to take part in more foreign visits this year, as she seeks to take her work with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Development around the globe.As well as William’s Earthshot Awards in Mumbai, a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Indian capital would likely be on the agenda in Delhi.Recent reports have suggested that the Prince and Princess of Wales could travel to the United States to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence in July.However, royal sources insist Kensington Palace has not yet received an invitation to do so. Instead, Prince William is more likely to travel to the US alone if England progresses to the final of the World Cup in New Jersey on July 19.The last planned royal tour to India was in 2022, when the then Prince Charles and Camilla, then the Duchess of Cornwall, were earmarked to go to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in the autumn.The major tour was cancelled following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2023.Since then, the mission has been deemed too diplomatically sensitive due to India’s close ties to Russia in the midst of the war in Ukraine.But sources have now confirmed, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office believes the time is right to send the future king and queen on their biggest joint tour for more than four years, since they toured the Caribbean in 2022.With the Princess returning to full time royal duties following her cancer diagnosis in February 2024 and now being in remission, she is feeling “well and energised”, royal aides told The Mirror.A palace source said: “The Princess returned from Italy feeling deeply inspired by the warmth, care and sense of community she experienced throughout the visit.Article continues below“What resonated most strongly with Her Royal Highness was seeing children encouraged to grow through creativity, relationships, nature and emotional connection, with the whole community playing a role in supporting them.“She was particularly moved by the humility within the Reggio Emilia approach and the belief that adults can learn a great deal from children too, especially their curiosity, joy and openness to the world around them. The visit reinforced The Princess’s belief that in an increasingly digital and fast paced world, protecting human connection from the very earliest years of life has never been more important.”
