Arts and science buffs are bracing for arguably the biggest International Museum Day ever in Greece, this Monday, May 18, with various events, special happenings and free entrance for all across the country, that aspires to promote museum tourism further, in line with international practices.

This year’s IMD theme is: “Museums Uniting a Divided World” and even though the international day falls on a Monday, museums will open their doors to celebrate it.

IMD events are scheduled over the weekend and next week, highlighting to all people, young and old, the role museums do and can play in information, education, entertainment and fun for Greek and foreign visitors alike.

The main event of this IMD in Greece is held on Saturday in Ancient Olympia, as the Hellenic Department of the International Council of Museums has set the Archaeological Museum of Olympia and the Museum of the Olympic Games of Antiquity as this year’s honored museums.

Highlighting the significance of this alternative form of tourism, the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki is hosting on Monday at 12 p.m. a one-day conference titled: “Museum Tourism: Social and economic development” with the participation of Dr Xavier Greffe, the International Scientific Committees President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
