Highlanders' Caleb Tangitau picks up an injury during the Chiefs v Highlanders on Friday.

All Blacks Test prospect Caleb Tangitau appears set for a long stint on the sideline after suffering a serious injury during a Super Rugby match for his Otago Highlanders.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph said the initial diagnosis was that speedy wing Tangitau had ruptured his Achilles tendon late in the 42-12 loss to the Waikato Chiefs in Hamilton on Friday night.

It is a major blow for the 23-year-old, who was widely considered a chance to make his Test debut for New Zealand this year.
