Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced the suspension of the Superintendent of Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata, N. Kujur, and Chief Controller Dipto Ghorai following the seizure of 23 mobile phones during a major crackdown at the facility. The CM has also ordered a CID probe and said he has confidence in the investigation agency.“Following the recovery of the mobile phones, the Superintendent of Presidency Central Correctional Home, N. Kujur, and the Chief Controller, Dipto Ghorai, have been suspended,” Adhikari said. Departmental proceedings will be initiated against the duo.Speaking at the state secretariat Nabanna, the Chief Minister said a major operation was conducted at the Presidency Central Correctional Home by a state police team led by Director General (Correctional Services) Natarajan Ramesh Babu and Deputy Commissioner (South Division) of Kolkata Police, V.S.R. Ananthnag.N. Ramesh Babu said, “We made a surprise visit and formed ten teams with Kolkata Police and conducted a four-hour raid. We recovered 23 mobile phones and are investigating how they entered the premises.”“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will probe to identify the individuals whose SIM cards were used in the seized mobile phones and examine the calls made,” Adhikari said.“We received inputs that a large number of mobile phones, including smartphones, were seized, and a nexus has been unearthed. This was either done with the support or negligence of the previous government,” he said.“Criminals are running networks from jail. This has been a long-standing issue. All jail authorities should be cautioned. From Dumdum Central Jail to Berhampore Central Jail, we are determined to end this,” he added.He also said similar operations will be carried out in other correctional homes across the state. Adhikari added that individuals like Shahjahan and other miscreants are allegedly running networks from inside correctional homes.Adhikari issued a warning to all correctional homes against the use of illegal mobile phones.
