West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday (May 18, 2026) said the State government will not tolerate violence against police personnel.He met senior officers of Kolkata Police’s South East Division to review the law-and-order situation a day after violence broke out at the Park Circus seven-point crossing in Kolkata, officials said.“People can place their demands and grievances, but stone-pelting while raising religious slogans will not be tolerated. I appeal to people not to indulge in such acts. Do not think the previous government is still there,” said Mr. Adhikari after visiting police officers injured in the violence.He urged the Union Home Ministry to keep the remaining CAPF battalions in the State till the West Bengal government can augment its police strength.“Forty people have been arrested so far in connection with the Park Circus violence. Will not tolerate attacks on police personnel,” Mr. Adhikari said. “Strict action will be taken against those who violate law,” he added.Several police personnel were injured after protesters allegedly hurled stones and bricks at security forces in the minority-dominated area on Sunday (May 17).Trouble erupted during a protest over an anti-encroachment drive in the Tiljala area, police said, adding that several persons were detained in connection with the incident.A large police contingent remained deployed in and around Park Circus on Monday to prevent any further flare-up, officials added.(With inputs from PTI) Published - May 18, 2026 03:15 pm IST
