A new scientific study on dementia prevalence in mountainous Crete will begin on May 18 in the Municipality of Anogeia, marking 20 years since the area’s first major survey on the condition.

Researchers describe it as the first repeat dementia prevalence study ever conducted in Greece, giving it significant scientific value. Findings are expected to contribute to public health planning, early prevention strategies, and better support services for patients and families.

The research, titled “The Prevalence of Dementia in Mountainous Crete,” will examine how dementia rates and patterns have evolved over two decades, while also supporting the development of improved prevention and elderly care policies.

Four researchers specializing in psychology and social work will conduct door-to-door interviews across Anogeia with residents aged over 65, using a structured questionnaire. The study is expected to last around 20 days.

The original Anogeia study, carried out 20 years ago, was among Greece’s largest dementia surveys and focused on a mountain population with a traditional lifestyle and distinct social characteristics.
