Chinese Bridge contestants pose together after the national finals at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town.

South Africa’s top Mandarin-speaking university students gathered at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) on May 14, 2026, for the national final of the 25th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition, a globally recognised platform for language, cultural exchange, and international engagement.

Held at the university’s main hall, the event was hosted by the Confucius Institute in partnership with CHN Energy Longyuan South Africa, drawing contestants, educators, parents, and diplomatic representatives for a showcase of Chinese language proficiency and cultural expression.

The competition, launched in 2002 by China’s Ministry of Education, has grown into one of the most influential international platforms for Chinese language learners, with participants from more than 160 countries taking part in preliminary rounds each year. Often referred to as the "Olympics" of Chinese language learning, it provides a pathway for top-performing students to advance to global finals in China.

At the UWC event, contestants demonstrated their Mandarin skills through prepared speeches, question-and-answer sessions, and a range of cultural performances, reflecting both linguistic ability and a deeper appreciation of Chinese traditions and contemporary society.
