When summer finally hits, I’m the first to ditch the layers I’ve been bundled in all winter in favor of sleeveless dresses, short shorts and the occasional crop top. But when traveling abroad, that same enthusiasm for showing skin doesn’t always land the way it does in North America. In some parts of the world, dressing modestly, especially for women, isn’t just a personal preference or a style choice. It can signal cultural awareness.

“Modesty is often tied to cultural identity, tradition and respect for the region’s heritage,” said Emmanuel Burgio, founder of Blue Parallel, a luxury tour company. “Showing more skin can feel out of sync with local norms and perceived as lacking awareness or respect, particularly in communities where these values remain strong.”

Modesty really depends on the context and place. In churches in Europe, for example, bare shoulders and knees are covered as a sign of humility and respect for the space. In many Muslim-majority countries, clothing that reveals cleavage or a lot of leg, like low-cut tops or short shorts, is often considered immodest, as it can be seen as sexually revealing or attention-grabbing, which runs counter to Islamic teaching and cultural norms.
