Across Asia, factories are closing, flagship airlines are cutting routes, and people are lining up for hours to buy cooking gas, all because of the war in Iran.

The conflict in the Middle East effectively halted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, all but cutting off a fifth of the world’s supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (or LNG).

Few regions have been impacted as much as the Asia-Pacific. In total, around 60 percent of the region’s crude oil imports and nearly a third of its LNG move through the strait.

The strait’s blockage prompted a sharp rise in the price of gasoline and other fuels across Asia and threatened to touch off an economic crisis that could exceed the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
