This year's oldest recipient is a 91-year-old mother of six.Since the award's inception in 1946, moms who have received the nod tend to have many children, live in rural areas, and have a history of active service in charitable and volunteer organisations.Municipalities, religious congregations and other groups can nominate mothers to regional state administrative agencies (Avis). These agencies pass their proposals to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, which sends a list to the country's knighthood council.There is, however, nothing stopping children from filing an application on their mother's behalf.Mother's Day, falling on the second Sunday in May, is an official flag day in Finland.
