A couple was convicted Thursday of exposing its six young children to danger over the conditions the family was living in, in a small, dirty rooftop flat in western Athens.

The parents were given suspended sentences of 16 months in prison each.

They were arrested this week in the capital’s Peristeri suburb, when police inspected their apartment following an anonymous complaint over the six children’s living conditions. The flat was described as very dirty.

The children, aged 3-11, have been taken away from their parents on a prosecutor’s orders and sent to an Athens hospital where they are due to undergo medical examinations.
