The war in the Middle East loomed large over Thursday's much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, with Trump looking for China to exert its influence over Iran to soften Tehran’s negotiating position and ease its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
