MLA for Udupi Yashpal Suvarna, who as the then vice-president of Udupi Government Girls’ Junior College Development Committee spearheaded the anti-hijab campaign in 2022, on Wednesday expessed outrage against the government order permitting limited use of traditional and faith-based symbols.
In a statement here, Mr. Suvarna said the Congress government was moving to Islamise the educational system by withdrawing the 2022 order prescribing unifomrs in schools and PU colleges and allowing use of faith-based symbols, including hijab.
He said the government was now creating confusion in the educational system by allowing the wearing of hijab in schools and colleges, contrary to the intention of school uniforms to eliminate discrimination based on caste, religion, or wealth among students in schools and colleges.
Mr. Suvarna noted that in December 2021, six students of the Government Girls’ Pre-University College in Udupi demanded permission to wear the hijab, creating a controversy and creating confusion across the State and the country, which affected the education system.
“People of the State have not forgotten that some banned sectarian organisations tried to disrupt peace and order through the hijab controversy,” he said.
