Jon Goulder, who also sells a chair for $1400, says Australia can make furniture and compete commercially. He’s now waiting for his first skyscraper job.
Jon Goulder’s best-selling chair costs $3700. He first made it in 2017, but after supplying an updated version to new Melbourne restaurant Yiaga six months ago, sales of the walnut wood and pressed leather Pavilion chair doubled.
Goulder, born into a long line of furniture makers in Bowral, in the NSW Southern Highlands, also sells a lower priced hardwood and scalloped leather-back chair for $1400. He designed that to fit the budget for the restaurant at a redeveloped Adelaide Festival Centre.
