Himanta Biswa Sarma, a senior leader in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has taken oath as the chief minister of India's northeastern state of Assam for a second consecutive term.
The BJP retained power in Assam last week, winning 82 of 126 seats in the assembly elections held on 9 April. Its allies won 20 more seats.
Sarma is seen as one of the architects of BJP's rapid growth in India's northeast - a region where smaller parties and the Congress once dominated politics.
The BJP - whose vote share in Assam remained less than 12% until a decade ago - came to power in 2016 and has retained control since then. Its vote share has increased to 38%.
Sarma is the legislator from Jalukbari constituency, located on the northwestern periphery of Guwahati - the largest city in the northeast. He has held the seat since 2001 despite changing political affiliations.
