United States Srcretary of State Marco Rubio and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin on Thursday discussed humanitarian efforts and peace in the Middle East, a US State Department spokesman said.

During their meeting in the Vatican, Rubio and Parolin discussed mutual cooperation and pressing international issues, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said, noting that Rubio welcomed the recent arrival of Archbishop Caccia as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

Rubio and Parolin focused on "ongoing humanitarian initiatives in the Western Hemisphere" and "efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.

The discussion reflected the enduring partnership between the United States and the Holy See in promoting religious freedom."
