WASHINGTON — First lady Melania Trump honored mothers of United States military service members, including those serving in the war in Iran, as she spoke about the "quiet power" of motherhood ahead of Mother's Day this weekend.

"This is a time of military conflict for America, whereby we honor our selfless and valiant service members regularly," the first lady, joined by President Donald Trump, said at a White House event in the East Room that included military mothers. "Today is the day we hold their mothers in the highest regard."

The event came after the president earlier in the day warned that the paused military operation in Iran would continue "at a much higher level and intensity than it was before" if Tehran refuses to agree to a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10. Melania Trump, a mother herself, said mothers of service members "find themselves alone, awake with their thoughts, in the darkest hours of the night." She said the nation must also remember mothers with spouses overseas.
