It seems money can’t buy you everything.Billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, got an Amazon warehouse’s worth of hate on social media Monday during the 2026 Met Gala. The couple acted as honorary chairs and lead sponsors for this year’s event, and reportedly dropped $10 million in an attempt to pay their way into the fashion world. The gala, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, has morphed into a vehicle for offering certain celebrities a high degree of fashion clout. The event also epitomizes, as the Times put it, “the country’s yawning wealth inequality,” and the couple’s presence intensified fears that we are indeed living in another Gilded Age. It should also be noted that Sánchez Bezos is not considered a fashion pioneer and tends to follow trends rather than start them.Vogue did seem to attempt to soft-launch Sánchez Bezos as a fashion girly by publishing a photo of her in her wedding dress on its June 2025 digital cover. But when the couple’s invitations for their nuptials in Venice, Italy, were published online, the design cemented their reputation for pretty basic taste. With that in mind, haters drank their hater-aid and went off on the couple on X Monday night:Yaaaas give us nothing Lauren Sanchez!— Drama (@DramaDropper) May 4, 2026It’s giving David’s Bridal.— Emily A.
