Krishnagiri district’s six Assembly segments were secured two each by the two Dravidian majors and the TVK. The TVK won Uthangarai (Reserved) and Krishnagiri constituencies, the DMK alliance won Thally and Vepanahalli constituencies and the AIADMK won Hosur and Bargur constituencies.
In Krishnagiri seat, both the Dravidian majors tasted bitter defeat as the TVK secured a victory by a margin of 17,801 votes. TVK candidate P. Mukundan polled 89,374 votes, including 1,122 postal votes. He defeated the AIADMK’s sitting MLA Ashok Kumar, who polled 71,573 votes. INC’s Dr. A. Chellakumar polled 60,642 votes.
It was a close contest in Vepanahalli seat with the AIADMK and the DMK coming neck-and-neck. The AIADMK’s incumbent MLA and party deputy general secretary K.P. Munusamy lost to the DMK by a mere 138 votes. The DMK’s P.S. Srinivasan polled 74,691 votes and Mr. Munusamy polled 74,553 votes. The TVK’s S.R. Sampangi polled 63,907 votes.
Bargur was a clear win for the AIADMK’s E.C. Govindarajan, who polled 71,240 votes and won by a margin of 6,012 votes. The outgoing DMK MLA and party district secretary D. Mathiazhagan polled 65,228 votes, coming third next only to the TVK candidate E. Muralidharan’s 66,999.
