A 42-year-old migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh was arrested by Government Railway Police (GRP) at the railway station in Jolarpet town in Tirupattur on Saturday for stealing cash and gold ornaments from passengers.
The police said the arrested person was identified as Mohammed Rias, a native of Unnao town in UP. Initial inquiry revealed that the GRP team received many complaints from commuters of petty crime, including missing gold ornaments and cash. Cases were registered by GRP at Jolarpet railway station.
Special teams were formed to nab the suspect. The police analysed CCTV footage at the railway station and nearby places. They found the suspect Rias, who got off from the train during such petty crimes reported by victims at the railway station. The police nabbed him during routine surveillance at the railway station.
The police said Rias targeted senior citizens and women travelling in long distance trains to rob gold ornaments and cash in the wallet. Based on the information, the police recovered ₹3 lakh and two sovereigns of gold jewellery from him.
He was lodged at the Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
